General Information

Background
The Third International Symposium on Physical Sciences in Space 2007 (ISPS 2007) is the successor to the Second Symposium which was held in Toronto, Canada in May 2004. The First Symposium was held in Sorrento, Italy in September 2000. ISPS 2007 is organised by the Japan Society of Microgravity Application and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and is sponsored by the IMSPG (International Microgravity Strategic Planning Group).

Scope
ISPS is the International forum for the presentation, discussion and development of projects utilising the space environment for research in a broad range of topics in physics. This will include results of experiments carried out on the ground as well as on free-fall platforms such as drop towers, parabolic aircraft flights, sounding rockets, unmanned recoverable capsules and also the International Space Station. In parallel to the symposia in the respective disciplines, ISPS offers a unique opportunity to develop research projects of an interdisciplinary nature, with gravity, or the absence of it, as common denominator. Occurring a 3-year interval, ISPS is a unique interdisciplinary Symposium that adequately complements other, more discipline orientated ones.

* Silk Road Festival will be held at the Shosoin Shrine during this period and a good chance to learn how western goods were imported into Japan in ancient times.

Symposium Place: Nara City (old capital in Japan, former capital to Kyoto)
The most convenient means to reach Nara city is to get on a direct flight to the Kansai International Airport (KIX). From there, the Airport Limousine Bus is convenient. It takes approximately 85 minutes to arrive at Nara Hotel and Nara Station (Kintetsu and JR lines). Buses depart from stop No.9 and are scheduled to depart approximately every 60 minutes.

Access to Nara
Transportation to Nara from abroad is shown in the following diagram. The most convenient means of transportation is to take a direct flight to the Kansai International Airport (KIX). From there, the simplest route to Nara is by the Airport Limousine Bus, which takes approximately 85 minutes to arrive at Nara Hotel and Nara Station (Kintetsu and JR lines). This costs JPY 1,800 one way, per person. Buses depart from stop No.9 and are scheduled to depart approximately once every 60 minutes. Should there be any inquiries regarding access to Nara, please ask at the Information Desk at the airport on the first floor in front of the arrivals area.

From Nara Station, city bus numbers 2 or 6, or buses bound for Takabatake-cho may be taken to bus stop, “Daibutsu-den Kasugataisha Mae” (approximately a five-minute ride). From there it is only a three-minute walk to the Nara-ken New Public Hall (Shin-kokaido). Buses run every five minutes. The basic fare for a taxi is JPY 590 plus JPY 90 per 296m. The cost of a taxi from JR Nara Station, or Kintetsu Nara Station to the Nara-ken New Public Hall (Shin-kokaido) should be around JPY 680 - JPY 800.

It is recommended that participants planning to travel in Japan purchase a Japan Rail Pass. This pass encompasses all JR trains including the Bullet train (Shinkansen) and the Narita Express. Please note that this pass must be purchased prior to arrival since it can not be purchased in Japan. The price for a 7-day pass is about JPY 30,000.
